Structure Fire – O’Neal Road

On Sunday, January 15, 2012, the St. Amant and Seventh District Fire Departments were dispatched to O’Neal Road for a working structure fire.

“Over 50 area volunteer firefighters from the 7th District, St. Amant, Galvez-Lake and Gonzales fire departments battled the fire”, said James LeBlanc, chairman of Ascension Parish Fire Protection District No. 1.

Mike Breaux, a St. Amant Fire Safety Officer, was one of the first responders to arrive at the scene. As smoke filled the trailer, Breaux said he found family members inside struggling to get a resident out as her legs were caught under her wheelchair. Breaux said he told the family members to leave and rolled the resident out backwards.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an open flame near an oxygen tank.

St. Amant Fire Receives New Fire Truck

On October 22nd, 2011, the St. Amant Fire Department received a new fire truck from Ferrara Fire Apparatus in Holden, LA.

“This is wonderful,” said Fire Chief James LeBlanc. “Having this piece of equipment will afford us the opportunity to do our job even better than we already are. First and foremost, we service the people of the St. Amant community. This will only help us.”

Evening Thunderstorms Cause Damage

August 23rd, 2011 – A strong thunderstorm knocked out power, rocked vehicles on the road and tore the roof off of a St. Amant business Tuesday evening.

St. Amant Fire Chief James LeBlanc estimates that the strong winds accompanying the summer storm blew for about 20 minutes, tearing the roof off at Martinez Seafood (La. 431 and Black Bayou Road). LeBlanc reports that the wind forced drivers to pull to the side of the road and power was out until late in the evening in the St. Amant area.

During the storm, separate car crashes occurred at La. 431 and Gold Place Road and at La. 431 and La. 429, LeBlanc said. No one was injured in either crash.

LeBlanc reports that he has not seen a storm like this in St. Amant since tornadoes struck the area about two years ago.

Mike Efferson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Slidell, said radar estimates show the storm dropped about an inch of rain in St. Amant.

St. Amant Fire Hosts Parish-Wide Junior Firefighter Training

On March 19th, 2011, the St. Amant Fire Department hosted a parish-wide Junior Firefighter training event at its main Fire Station on Stringer Bridge Road.

Junior Firefighters from Fire Departments across Ascension Parish came together to learn how they can provide assistance around a Fire scene. The three hour training event included exercises in rolling up hoses, donning emergency gear, setting up a rehabilitation area and changing SCBA tanks.

“It is great to see all of these Junior Firefighters coming out to participate, the skills they learn through these trainings will be beneficial to everyone on a Fire scene. These are the firefighters of tomorrow.”, stated St. Amant Fire Department Captain Scott Cohenour.

The next parish-wide Junior Firefighter training event is scheduled for April 9th, 2011 at the 7th District Fire Department on Highway 44.

Structure Fire – Jim Babin Road

On Saturday, March 12th, 2011, the St. Amant and Seventh District Fire Departments were dispatched to Jim Babin Road in St. Amant, LA for a working structure fire.

“The fire was brought under control by Ascension Firefighters within 18 minutes of arrival, but not before the fire entered the attic and caused major damage to the structure”, stated James E. LeBlanc, St. Amant Fire Chief Officer.

Mutual-aid support was requested from neighboring departments, a total of twenty-eight firefighters and nine apparatus responded to the call and remained on-scene for approximately four hours.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early details point to a golf cart charging near the carport. Damage to the residence is estimated to be $120,000.

One Ascension firefighter was transported to a local hospital for heat exhaustion.
